The music of Aaliyah, who died twenty years ago this month in a plane crash, will be available on streaming services from August 20. Currently, only part of her songs can be listened to via Spotify, among others.
Due to an agreement between Blackground Records 2.0 (the label where the singer was under contract) and digital music publisher EMPIRE, her second and third (and final) albums One in a Million (1996) and Aaliyah (2001) will also be available to stream from August 20.

Ultimate Aaliyah
Under this agreement, other albums by Blackground Records artists will also be available to listen to through streaming services, including those from Timbaland and Toni Braxton.
Albums release dates will be in chronological order: One in a Million from 1996 streamed on August 20. The music series ends on October 8 with Ultimate Aaliyah, the artist’s compilation album that appeared in 2005.
Her heirs have been in talks with streaming platforms for some time to make the singer’s oeuvre available again.
Aaliyah’s 1994 debut album Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number and the 2002 compilation album I Care 4 U are currently available for streaming.

Remember Aaliyah
That the other two albums are not yet legally available online has to do with the actions of the singer’s uncle and former manager, Barry Hankerson. He is the license owner.
Aaliyah, who scored big hits such as Are You That Somebody and Try Again, died on August 25, 2001, at the age of 22. The cause was a plane crash in the Bahamas. She recorded the music video for the song Rock The Boat over there.
