Many individuals journey to their hometowns or explore different provinces during this time, exacerbating traffic congestion. Recognizing these challenges, the decision to extend the holiday aims to facilitate smoother travel experiences for both locals and tourists alike.
Prime Minister’s Declaration
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has declared Friday, April 12, a special government holiday, amplifying the festivities with a five-day weekend. This proactive measure, announced two months ahead of the festival, provides ample time for individuals and businesses to prepare for the celebrations.
Tourism Promotion
Prime Minister Thavisin urges the Tourism Ministry to promote second-tier provinces during the extended holiday. By highlighting lesser-known destinations, the government aims to distribute tourism revenue more evenly across the country, benefiting local economies and communities.
Traditional Celebration and Cultural Recognition
Traditionally, Songkran is celebrated from April 13 to April 15. However, with April 16 designated as a holiday instead of the following Saturday, this year’s festivities promise to be exceptional. April 13 marks Songkran, also known as National Elderly Day, while April 14 and 15 are observed as National Family Day and Thai New Year Day, respectively, providing families with extended time together.
Global Recognition
The significance of Songkran extends beyond Thailand’s borders, earning global recognition from UNESCO in December of the previous year as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This acknowledgment underscores the festival’s cultural significance and its impact on global heritage.
