Is the Thailand Cannabis Industry Starting Today?

Is the Thailand cannabis industry really open for business today? Well, yes and no. But you wouldn’t be living in Thailand if there wasn’t some confusion and bureaucratic madness thrown into the bong… I mean the mix!

Let’s rephrase this question. Is it now okay to bust out the grow lights and grow a massive crop of The Chronic? Again, yes and no. There is lots of regulatory red tape of course, but in effect, you can grow under certain circumstances.

The new Thaland cannabis industry laws come into place today

Thailand Cannabis Industry News

The new Thailand cannabis laws come into place today, Friday 29 January 2021. The new rules mean that anyone in Thailand can now grow, trade, or have hemp in their possession. These new rules will allow the production, trade, export, import, and distribution of hemp, otherwise known as kanchong, and a Type 5 narcotic.

But when we say you can do all those things, you can’t really unless you apply for the requisite licenses and approval from the government. But I suppose that makes sense. This is no different in other places where cannabis can be legally grown in Canada and the USA.

New Thailand Cannabis Laws

Although the laws might not be what smokers wanted, it is definitely a move in the right direction. We live in a time where Thailand’s laws are starting to make more sense than in the UK and other so-called ‘innovative’ Western nations.

The deputy secretary-general of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Supattra Boonserm, said that the Thai Public Health Minister signed the deal on Thursday. Anyone can now seek permission to grow, produce and distribute hemp for all purposes. This could be medicinal, commercial, educational, or even for research purposes. However, those who grow without permission will still be subject to criminal law.

The Future of the Thai Cannabis Industry

Whether you love or hate cannabis, one cannot overlook its potential medicinal properties. I personally feel all types of cannabis should be available to buy and sell. Many other, more dangerous things are legal. Let’s be honest here, nothing is worse than alcohol. Not only do many people do stupid things when drunk, but they are a nightmare to have a conversation with when you are sober or stoned.

However, the Thailand cannabis laws will have to change a little to meet my weed utopia, but we can only hope. This is a good move in the right direction though, so kudos to the Thai government for a change.
