Songkran festival 2022 is canceleld at Khaosan Road Bangkok

Khao San Road Bangkok, or simply Khaosan, the Backpacker’s favourite destination to start their Thailand holidays, will be quiet during Songkran Festival this year. The Business Owners in that area take another hit of revenue losses as they feel uncomfortable with the multiple restrictions to comply with safety.

 

Khaosan business owners will be held accountable for any safety issues, including removing masks from the spectators. Safe operating a large-scale happening like Songkran Festival is almost impossible and reason enough for these owners to let Songkran float into 2023.

 

 

The President, Sanga Ruangwattanakul, said that Khaosan association members had discussed all the safety measures that must apply for this event. The removal of facemasks and replacing wet ones with new masks, plus a ban on alcoholic drinks at the party grounds, present enough risk of voting in favour of cancellation.

 

The area sought permission to hold the famous water festival on the roads to embark, one of the world’s largest water festivals. Khaosan Road is particularly popular with western and Israelian backpackers. It attracted thousands of travelling spectators before Covid-19, celebrating life and unity.

 

Thailand’s water festival has dried up over the last two years, making it almost impossible for local business operators to keep their businesses afloat.

 

The Khaosan business association president has already informed the district office to cancel the upcoming event at Khaosan Road. He forecasts that local Thais will visit Khaosan Road for dining and drinking during a sober Songkran Festival celebration of life. He added that some business owners insist on continuing the celebrations without water splashing. For the rest of Khaosan, it will be business as new normal usual with a 30-40% room occupancy rate.
