Chiang Rai
Chiang Rai is the Lanna city where Snow white should have been born. The northern provincial town is pleasant but sleepy. Cultural attractions and Chiang Rai events are numerous, and the town is down to earth. When you come from a turbulent city, Chiang Rai needs some days for adaption. The Chiang Rai night bazaar offers a great Thailand attraction.
The city went a long way back in history, to 1262 and served as the capital for the Mengrai Dynasty. Even today, the town is full of buildings breathing the Lanna identity. An impressive collection of ancient temples combine the rich art, cuisine and rich northern music.
Chiang Rai is not the city of choice for nightlife. The famous clock tower that turns into different colours is the local centrepiece in the Chiang Rai shopping area.
The events calendar include its identical Chiang Rai Night Bazaar. It also has its own Jazz Festival. The city is a significant chill factor, and the few luxury hotels around the river offer a relaxing escape from noise and city stress.
