Thai Elephant Day was created in 1998 after The Thailand Government declared the 13th of March National Thai Elephant Day. The relationship between elephants and the Thai people is extraordinary. The elephant plays a significant role in transportation, labour and battle in the lives of Thai people. The date was chosen because The Royal Forest designated the white elephant as the national animal of Thailand.
Thai Elephant Day Protects Thailand Elephants against violence.
Over the years the Thai elephants faced violence and the number of elephants was reduced from 100,000 to 2,000 – 3,000 wild elephants and approximately 2,700 domesticated elephants in the last 100 years.
Thai Elephant Day is to educate people about these beautiful Species.
This day exists for three essential reasons. The first is to show to the Thai people how great the elephants are to Thailand, the second is to show how Thailand depends on elephants and the third objective is to promote awareness protecting and to conserve the Thai elephant population.
Exhibitions from many organisations, drawing activities, essays from the students at Kui Buri National Park, Prachuapkhirikhan, are part of National Elephant Day.
