Understanding Loy Krathong Festival 2023
Loy Krathong Festival 2023 แปล ไทย drops on the full moon of the 12th of the Thai lunar calendar, which usually falls in November. However, the festival drops this year on 27 and 28 November 2023. The festival is celebrated across the kingdom and not just in Chiang Mai. In Thai, ‘Loi’ means ‘to float, and ‘Krathong’ means ‘raft’. During the evening’s festivities across Thailand, the skies are full of colourful and fiery lanterns, thousands floating up towards the cosmos, creating a breathtaking skyline that can only really be appreciated by those absorbing the spectacle first-hand.
Colourful Thailand Festival Fun
People usually make the raft from banana leaves or bread, which is better for the environment. Using the elaborately folded banana leaves and decorating them with candles, flowers, and incense creates a lovely and aesthetically pleasing raft.
People lit and pushed ‘Krathong’ out to sea or on a river bed. It symbolises casting away one’s problems or sins of the previous year to start a new one. After a few moments, the lit portion of the raft elegantly floats into the sky. This repeatedly happens by hundreds of other onlookers simultaneously and is simply breathtaking. Casting away the Krathong is also an apology to the Goddess of the Water for all the bad things done to the sea, rivers and lakes during the previous year.
