Who were the most streamed artists on Spotify in 2020? As the record industry is still scratching around wondering how to deal with piracy and illegal downloads, Spotify has taken affirmative action over the past few years to move legal digital downloads in the right direction.
Although there are lots of arguments on how much the artists get from these deals, they have always been routinely ripped off. And it’s best to compare Spotify streams to song plays on the radio instead of single or album sales. The consumers do not own the music when they stream it, but they can choose to listen to it. And the record companies get nominal fees per stream. However, analyzing the Spotify streaming numbers gives you a great idea about who are the biggest artists.
Here are the top-5 most streamed artists on Spotify in 2020, and the stats might not be what you expected. The totals are calculated by the average monthly streams throughout 2020.
#5 – Ed Sheeran – 58.40 million average monthly streams
For the past 6-months of 2019, Ed Sheeran was the streaming king of the world. He was easily the most-streamed geezer on Spotify in 2019. But this year he slips down into 5th place. However, almost 60 million streams per month are nothing to scoff at. The ginger-haired English singer-songwriter didn’t really have an active year in terms of releases so his fall from grace is not that surprising.
#4 – Dua Lipa – 62.55 million – Most Streamed Artists on Spotify in 2020
2020 was a massive year for the English singer/songwriter Dua Lipa. Although she originally sprung to prominence back in 2017 with her self-named debut album, she has really taken it to another level this year. She released her second studio album, Future Nostalgia, which was a critically-acclaimed hit across the world. This has seen Dua become number-4 on the list of the most streamed artists on Spotify in 2020.
#3 – The Weeknd – 65.84 million
Perhaps one of the biggest surprises this year is the popularity of the Canadian born R&B singer/songwriter, and producer known as ‘The Weeknd’. The artist’s real name is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye. Although The Weeknd has been around since first signing a deal back in 2012, this year saw his streams reach fever pitch across Spotify.
#2 – Justin Bieber – 76.29 million – 2nd Most Streams Artist on Spotify in 2020
Some things never change. Justin Bieber being one of the most popular pop stars on the planet has been standard fare for many years. However, Justin became one of the most streamed artists on Spotify in 2020. This was largely due to the release of his latest album, called Justin Bieber: Seasons. With an average monthly stream figure at 76 million, Bieber sits in second place by a long way.
#1 – Ariana Grande – 78.70 average monthly streams
Just edging out Bieber to be the most-streamed pop star on the planet in 2020, Ariana Grande has had a fantastic year. Not many people on the planet had a good 2020, but Ariana did. All that hard work and worshiping her gods really paid off this year for Grande. She reached a massive total of an average of 78.70 million streams per month on Spotify throughout the year. Obviously, one of the main reasons for her success this year was the release of her sixth studio album, Positions, which was massive.
Although it’s been a difficult year for most people, Spotify has grown from strength to strength. With the acquisition of Joe Rogan and lots of people on lockdown with nothing much to do, Spotify has become our ‘go-to’ place for online music streaming. The stats for the most streamed artists on Spotify in 2020 is testament to that. Please click here to subscribe to Spotify Thailand.
